About our association
When the Spangdahlem Air Base celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2003, representatives from politics, business, and public life seized the opportunity to fulfill a long-cherished wish: the founding of the Host Nation Council Spangdahlem e.V.
With the establishment of the association, a number of municipalities, districts, cities and companies located around Spangdahlem Air Base were able to join as members. The founding assembly took place in the Parliamentary Society in Berlin, where the first board was elected, consisting of the then director of the Bitburger brewery, Dr. M. Dietzsch, mayors of the surrounding municipalities as their representatives, the District Administrator of the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm and members of state and federal parliaments.
Through its work, the association emphasizes the importance of the presence of U.S. military forces in the region and the high value of the German-American friendship. For more than 70 years now, the military personnel and their families have had a lasting impact on the culture and life in the Eifel region. A benefit for both sides. Most of the Americans stationed in Germany live in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The association now has around 200 members and supports up to a dozen cultural, artistic, sports, or educational events with both German and American participants each year.
The Host Nation Council Spangdahlem e. V. and its members were awarded the MEDAL OF DISTINCTION, the highest award that civilians can receive, by the United States Air Forces in Europe in December 2010.
